The Department of Food Science and Nutrition, University of Thessaly (Karditsa, Greece) is organizing a one-day workshop on “Local and global reactions to the food security crisis”. The aim of the workshop is to initiate a comprehensive high-level discussion on the impacts of the war in Ukraine on food availability and security across the globe and on the most relevant policy reactions to this crisis. The workshop will take place in Karditsa, Greece, on 10th June, 2022, between 11:00 and 17:00 (Athens time).

The workshop will be structured into two sessions. A plenary session will include presentations by distinguished scholars from the the World Bank, and Universities from Europe. Then, a round table discussion organized and coordinated by Prof. Demetris Psaltopoulos (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki) will aim to enlighten workshop attendants on the perspective of international organizations such as the World Bank and the European Commission on the crisis.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has caused a humanitarian crisis, while simultaneously disrupting global agricultural markets and energy systems. Developing countries, especially those highly-dependent on imported grains and fertilizers from Ukraine and Russia are expected to be mostly affected. The crisis is expected to have consequences for European food supply and further exacerbate an already challenging situation for European farmers.

Limiting the conflict’s impacts on global agri-food systems requires effective national policies and global collaboration. Policy initiatives should trigger a short-term response through keeping trade open and supporting consumers (especially the vulnerable) and farmers. But it should also look at the medium- and longer- terms and keep on pursuing the transformation of food systems so that they become more resilient to future shocks, more inclusive and able to deliver food and nutrition security.

In this context, the scope of the workshop “Local and global reactions to the food security crisis” is to analyze the individual issues of the crisis, conduct a fruitful and constructive dialogue between scholars, experienced officials of international organizations and stakeholders, as well as to draw conclusions, which could potentially contribute to the development of effective policy response strategies.
