THE DEPARTMENT OF FOOD SCIENCE AND NUTRITION OF THE UNIVERSITY OF THESSALIA IS ORGANIZING AN EVENT ON THE TOPIC OF LOCAL AND INTERNATIONAL REACTIONS TO THE GLOBAL FOOD CRISIS

The conference is aimed at all productive actors in the agri-food sector (farmers, agronomists, food and nutrition consultant scientists, agricultural cooperatives, public bodies) as well as the academic community and is free of charge.

Recent challenges such as the pandemic, environmental issues and, more importantly, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, have caused a humanitarian crisis while also causing serious problems in the international agricultural market. As Russia and Ukraine are major producers of cereals, corn, oilseeds, as well as fertilizers and energy resources, the problems in both production and international trade are expected to worsen further. This international crisis has direct and adverse effects on the European Union’s food supply chain, on the one hand due to the increase in prices at the consumer level and on the other hand due to the increase in the production costs of basic agricultural products and, by extension, food. It appears that the mitigation of these adverse effects could be possible both by formulating appropriate national policies and by achieving constructive and effective international cooperation.
In this context, the Department of Food Science and Nutrition of the University of Thessaly is organizing an event on the topic of local and international responses to the global food crisis.
The purpose of the event is to analyze the individual issues of this crisis, to conduct a fruitful and constructive dialogue, as well as to draw useful conclusions, which could potentially contribute to the formulation of response strategies for the food supply chain, at a national and international level.
The event will be attended by high-ranking executives from the most important International Organizations, such as the World Bank Group, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), and the European Union (EU). Also, a thorough discussion will take place where internationally distinguished scientists and executives of the Greek food industry will be positioned in the context of the formulation of potential response strategies.
